Napred Srbija i Japan”

FORMER JAPAN S AMBASSADOR TO SERBIA – TRANSLATOR VOLUNTEER ON OLYMPIC GAMES IN TOKYO

Message from MR. Toshio Tsunozaki

In Tokyo the opening of the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2020, which was postponed by 1 year due to the COVID19 pandemic, is just around the corner.

The Olympic relay torch, which started from Fukushima on 25th March, toured around Japan and now entered Chiba prefecture neighboring Tokyo. At Narita International Airport, groups of athletes from various countries are arriving one after another. And traffic control has already started around the main stadium, where the opening ceremony will be held on 23rd July.

Unfortunately the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games 2020 will be held under very unusual condition of the COVID19 pandemic. Recently IOC, the Japanese government and other stake holders decided to limit the number of spectators, but now they are considering not to allow any spectators, unless the pandemic situation will improve. Many municipalities throughout Japan decided to become host-towns for athletes from various countries and ready to welcome them with Japanese hospitality, but because of the pandemic, some cities were obliged to give up the idea of becoming a host-town.

As for Serbian teams, City of Hofu will receive the volleyball team, City of Fujimi, the wrestling and handball teams, City of Kashiwazaki, the water polo team, and City of Karatsu, the 3-men-basketball team. I hope all of these cities will be able to welcome Serbian teams without problems.

I applied for a language service volunteer of the Olympic Games 2020. Luckily I was accepted and asked to work for shooting games as an interpreter of, mainly, English and Russian language. Since then, I checked who are included in the Japanese shooting team and found out that the head coach of the team is a Serbian gold medalist ! His name is Goran Maksimovic and he won the gold medal for 10 meter air-rifle in 1988 in Seoul. I am looking forward to seeing him at the competition arena and addressing him in Serbian.

Napred Srbija i Japan!
